White County Fact: White County is home to a large Indian mound which is adorned by a white gazebo. Local legend is that the mound is the burial ground for an Indian couple. The legend tells of a young Chickasaw warrior named Sautee and the daughter of a Cherokee Chief named Nacoochee. The two discovered each other in the woods and fell in love. When Nacoochee’s father found out, he ordered that Sautee be thrown from the top of Yonah Mountain while his daughter watched. Nacoochee was devastated and threw herself from the mountain. After which her father realized his mistake and buried the two of them in the Indian Mound.
