Clarke County Fact:  Clarke County is Georgia’s smallest county by land area.   Within Clarke County is the Tree That Owns Itself.  According to local legend, the oak tree at the corner of South Finley and Dearing Streets was deeded to itself between 1820 and 1832.  According to Dale Brown, the tree now lies within the right of way of along Finley Street and is cared for by the City of Athens and local social clubs.
